About
SMAArt (Scientific Methodologies applied to Archeology and Art) is a Centre of research and education of the University of Perugia which joins together six different Departments of the University and some laboratories of the National Interuniversity Consortium for Science and Technology of Materials (INSTM).
In the Centre of Excellence SMAArt of the University of PerPartUNIPG2ugia (Scientific Methodologies applied to Archaeology and Art) studies on compositions and alterations of stones, bronzes, ceramics, glasses and other materials are currently carried out.
Centre SMAArt participates to several national and international research projects.In particular it coordinates the Eu-ARTECH Integrated Infrastructure Initiative (FP6).
Through the mobile facility MOLAB, in-situ studies several studies have been carried out on artworks of Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Antonello da Messina, Piero della Francesca, Donatello and many others, including contemporary artists, such as Mondriaan, Rothko, Burri, Warhol and others.

Relevant experience and role
UNIPG coordinates the project and therefore is responsible for the management activities.
PartUNIPG3It have also the leadership of MOLAB transnational activity providing a collection of portable instrumentation as well the SMAArt experience in non-destructive analyses of different types of artworks (as mural, canvas and panel paintings, illuminated manuscripts, ceramics, glasses, metals, etc.).
UNIPG is also involved in the  outreach programmes related activities in particular in the establishment of best practices and protocols towards common standards and in the coordination of dissemination and communication efforts. Furthermore the UNIPG team participates to two research projects devoted to the development of new portable instrumentation and innovative methodologies for  in-situ  diagnostics and conservation and innovative methodologies and instrumentation for laboratory research.
